Cold and flu season is upon us and is pretty much evident each year. There are obvious ways to prevent getting sick and strengthening your immune system such as, the flu shot. And ways of treating the flu, like Tamiflu. But in the age where health and wellness is a fad (and a fantastic one at that) there are tons of natural remedies for both preventing and helping the symptoms of colds and the flu in your kiddos! I have just recently in the last few years started making a conscious effort to try and use more natural alternatives when it comes to medicine, household products, and self care products. So here are 5 ways that my family has successfully avoided the flu this season, as well as 5 remedies (THAT WORK) for fighting those symptoms, all kid/family friendly!

5 ways to prevent the flu and colds

Elderberry syrup. You have probably read about elderberry somewhere, because it is becoming popular. Elderberry syrup is made from juicing and boiling the dark purple shrub of the elderberry tree. It is often sweetened for taste, just like cranberries are. Why elderberry is becoming so popular is because of it’s amazing benefits such as strengthening the immune system, treating cold and flu, hay fever, constipation, and sinus infection symptoms.

It is all the rage right now to make your own elderberry syrup, in fact I don’t believe it’s that difficult. However, elderberry is an herb and you have to make sure that you are diligent about using the correct parts of the elderberry, and taking the correct doses of your completed product. Consuming the wrong part of the elderberry or too much of it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

But for moms who are like me and don’t have the time nor the energy to get into making your own pot of elderberry syrup, there is an amazing brand of elderberry gummies by Zarbees that is kick a**! Totally safe for children 2+ and super easy to chew. They also contain vitamin C and and Zinc for that added immune support.

Essential Oils. If you are looking to nature to help boost your immune system, but aren’t using essential oils…are you even trying. 😉

-Lemon vitality oil is one of my favorite safer and more natural alternatives for killing germs. Who wants to clean your babie’s or kid’s toys with bleach? Not me. Not only does lemon safely and effectively help kill germs, it leaves a fresh and invigorating scent.

Thieves vitality oil. Your one stop shop for immune system support, made with lemon, clove, Eucalyptus Radiata, Cinnamon Bark, and rosemary essential oils. Thieves is a great oil to diffuse or if you dilute it with a carrier oil you can rub it on the bottom of feet. Adults can use the oil as a daily supplement in a capsule or adding a few drops to your tea. Thieves is a POWERHOUSE when it comes to immune support and I don’t know how my family would get through the cold and flu season without it!

Wash your hands, well duh. But do it with a more natural “antibacterial” soap. Thieves Foaming Hand Soap is a plant based formula that cleans hands without drying them out with harsh detergents and harmful chemicals. It’s made with the amazing essential oils blend Thieves, which is comprised of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. We keep this hand soap in our house year around. It’s perfect for my toddlers who obviously are prone to attracting germs on their hands and are in need of washing their hands, ALOT.

Boost your children’s  immune system with high quality supplements. No, I am not talking Paw Patrol gummies. I am talking ones formulated with Ningxia Wolfberry Fiber, whole foods, that are easily digested by your kiddos. Ones that contain probiotic and prebiotic fibers. If you have kiddos and you want to keep them from getting sick, MightyPro Prebitoic and Probiotic supplements, as well as Kidscents Mightyvites.

Taking a multivitamin and a probiotic are so beneficial for children. Both for strengthening their immune systems and for their overall well-being. Obviously as a mother you aren’t going to only feed your kid cheese balls all day. You are going to try your best to get them to eat a healthy, nutritious, and balanced diet. But, for the days where unfortunately your child has pretty much eaten cheese balls and refuses anything else, your supplements will take care of what they are missing.

I could go on and on about these two supplements, but they really are the cream of the crop when it comes to getting your child the food-based nutrients that they need and deserve without preservatives, synthetic colors or flavors, and anything else that their little bodies don’t need.

Simply get enough sleep, get exercise, reduce stress, and eat a healthy diet! Couldn’t lay that one out more simply. The healthier life is that you lead, the stronger and more active your immune system will be.

5 ways to ease your symptoms when you get a cold or the flu

When you have a cough, Zarbees cough syrup is a life saver. Made with dark honey and Ivy leaf, it helps reduce mucus and get that cough to go away. Seriously it gave me so much joy that not only does my son absolutely love the taste, but I wouldn’t hear a peep from him after he went to bed. Extremely effective and natural. Who wants to give their kiddo a hardcore cough suppressant when they are so little? Not me. And for your little littles, there is Zarbee’s cough syrup made with agave for 2 months and up!

When you have a fever Peppermint essential oil to the rescue. Look it’s not proven by science, but ask any momma into essential oils. Peppermint essential oil works for reducing fevers naturally. I usually add 1-2 drops of peppermint to at least a tablespoon of a carrier oil (coconut or olive oil) and you can rub it on the bottom of their feet. You can also diffuse the oil in your kiddos room, but see #5 for more details.

Need respiratory support? R.C. and RavenThese two oils are fabulous for respiratory support. I refer to them in my home as our natural alternative to Vick’s Vaporub. Ever heard your mom or grandma tell you to put Vick’s on the bottom of your feet and then out your socks on. You can totally do the same with these amazing essential oils. If your kids are older than 12 you can also mix the oils with a carrier oil and use it directly on their chests. And of course, you can diffuse them. I love diffusing these oils when my boys are sick, because it feels the room with those scents that really just open up your airways and make it easy to breathe again.

RC is a blend of blend of Spruce, Cypress, and three types of Eucalyptus oils (E. globulus, E. radiata, and E. citriodora.)

The Raven essential oil blend is a cool, refreshing combination of Ravintsara, Peppermint, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, and Wintergreen essential oils.

Stomach issues? Stomach issues are always so hard with kids. I have always felt like my kids were suffering the most when their tummies hurt or they were vomiting. And I know, the hardest thing to do is watch your child suffer and feel like you can’t do much about it. In my personal experience these natural remedies for stomach aches, vomiting, and nausea can work even better than the less natural ones that are on the market.

You have probably heard of gripe water, commonly marketed as a natural remedy to colic in newborns; however, gripe water can work for gas older children too. It’s usually made from ginger, dill, licorice, and fennel, and is a favorite in our household.

My second holy grail is another essential oil called, Digize. It does exactly what you think it would based upon the name, aids in digestion. A drop mixed with a carrier oil can be used on their tummies, or the bottoms of their feet. Digize can also be used in the diffuser. It has Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli oils for a spicy, exotic aromatic blend.

Diffuse, diffuse, diffuse. We obviously use a lot of essential oils in our household as natural alternatives and remedies to sickness. One of the best ways you can use all of the essential oils I have talked about is to diffuse them. What is diffusing exactly? A diffuser is a device that compresses air to atomize essential oils into airborne molecules. This makes it easy for your body to receive and use the essential oils.

I diffuse essential oils in my house everyday and I truly believe in their power. They have changed my life as a mother and have allowed for me to take care of my kiddos in the most natural and holistic way and I am truly grateful for it.

So when should you be diffusing what oils?

Lavender – To help promote relaxation. Great for helping the kids get to sleep.

Digize- During times of gas, nausea, stomach aches, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Peppermint- In the case of a headache or fever.

RC and Raven – Sickness with respiratory issues (bronchitis, cold, cough, stuffy nose, etc)

*Thieves: Diffuse this one anytime for immune system support. Has a great spicy aroma!

*Lemon: Honestly lemon is sso versatile and fresh smelling. You can diffuse it anytime. I love to diffuse it in my kitchen for that extra fresh aroma!
